One of the main methods of making Internet money is through advertising. Simply put, you allow ad networks to place advertisements on your website, and they pay you a cut of the revenue they earn from their clients. That’s pretty simple, right? Well, don’t be fooled: the world of Internet advertising is often murky, often confusing, and often downright dirty. Your first decision when entering this world is most likely going to be “which ad network should I choose?” In this article, we review three different ad networks which represent a large scope of the players out there. Which ad network you choose will ultimately depend on your site, your readership, and your own personal tastes and values.

The Giant – Google Adsense
“Do no evil” may be their motto, but the Internet behemoth that is Google has made its fair share of enemies, many of whom are suspicious at least (and downright scathing at most) of how the company runs its ad-sharing program. If you choose to use Adsense, you’ll be able to pick what sort of ads you want on your site – banners, imageboards, or Google’s signature text-box ads – as well as being able to customize the size, color scheme and even content of your ad displays. However, it’s often hard to determine the exact specifics of how you’re being paid. In particular, it’s difficult to figure out if the ads on your site are running on a CPM (cost per mille, meaning you get paid per thousand views of the ad) or CPC (cost per click, meaning you only get paid if someone clicks the ad) basis. Most ads on Adsense are CPC – which means extremely small payouts for low and mid-traffic sites, as well as a lot of flak against Google’s peanut-paying ways. Nevertheless, Adsense gives you a constant stream of ads which can be placed almost anywhere, and can be extremely profitable for larger sites with high traffic rates.

The Professional – Text Link Ads
Another thing Google has taken fire for is its surreptitious removal of a certain competitor from its search results, in what seemed to be a bid to kill off its rival’s traffic flow. Fortunately for webmasters, Text Link Ads (or TLA for short) is still doing its thing and has returned to the Google search pages as one of the premier providers of text-based and in-line advertising. TLA allows you to place ads anywhere you have text, whether it be using sidebar-boxes like Google’s or links to client-sites in your body text (also known as in-line ads). In general, TLA’s inline ads have some of the highest click-through rates of any ad provider – although they can get very annoying for your readers. A good pick for writing-heavy sites with lots of informational content.

The New Kid – Nuffnang
If you’re based in South East Asia, you may have already heard buzz about Nuffnang, one of the region’s most popular ad networks. Unlike the rather impersonal giants like Google and TLA, Nuffnang professes to focus on creating a sense of community amongst its publishers, often hosting parties and events which allow bloggers and webmasters to get to know each other. Canny PR moves aside, Nuffnang gives you some of the best CPM rates on the market while also allowing for customized ad placement and the like. The only downside is that sites only get ads depending on their traffic, so you won’t necessarily have an ad on your site at all times. Watch out for more networks like this springing up around the world: Nuffnang has plans to expand into the North American and European markets in the not-too-distant future.

Affiliate advertising revenue may be the foremost and most famous way of making Internet money, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other equally – or even more – lucrative means of getting rich and famous online. Here are a few suggestions which could net you a little bit of cash, get some steady income, or even make it big and famous.

1. Sell your junk.
One man’s trash is another man’s easy money. Forget about garage sales and pawnbrokers – the Internet is the place to go if you want to flog off some of that stuff you thought was a good idea but never ended up using. Both eBay and Craigslist are excellent places to sell your goods online, allowing you to either target local areas (much like a garage sale) and set minimum bids and prices, but there are a whole heap of other smaller electronic marketplaces to cater for every buyer and seller. Even social networks like Facebook and sharing sites like Flickr have online markets where enthusiasts and friends can swap, trade or barter for goods. The main thing to remember is that there’s a lot of rival sellers out there, so a persuasive ad, low price or other defining feature is essential if you want to clinch a sale.

2. Build something (and they will come)
Got a knack for making things rather than a gift for words or pictures? Don’t despair: the Internet has more than enough room for craftspeople. A simple website with Paypal functionality is all you need to get into business, and social media promotion through Twitter or Facebook can get the word out about your widget to the people who’ll want to buy it. This isn’t easy money, but it doesn’t get more fulfilling than selling stuff you enjoy making.

3. Learn a trade
Graphics design. Programming. Copywriting. These and many other creative-technical lines of work are flourishing thanks to the Internet, and there are jobs a-plenty out there for those who have the time, the skills, and the professionalism to do what needs to be done. Learning a coding language like PHP or XML can drop you in at the cutting-edge of web design and content creation, while honing your skills in image editing or writing for the web can not only get you some pretty decent dollars but also improve your communications or design skills for your day job. While it may be hard to snare your first few gigs from the many online forums out there, persistence and the right attitude can go a long way in building up your reputation.

The importance of having a blog for your business has been well documented over the better part of the last decade. It can not only bolster your SEO in the eyes of Google since you are constantly creating new, relevant content, but it can offer an outlet for potential customers to read more about your expertise and why they should use your product or services.

Now that any savvy business owner knows they need to have a blog, you can become their go-to blog expert and make money by creating and maintaining it from home. Below you will find a start up guide for just how to become a blogging expert and be on the road to making money using the internet from your living room!

Preparation

If you don’t currently know much about blogging, the first thing you need to do is a little research into what the best blogging platforms are and how you can use them effectively. The beauty of this part of the process is that you can do this for free. Check out some free, user-friendly blogging platforms below:

1. WordPress.com/WordPress.org – WordPress is the most popular blog software today – it has been downloaded 12.5 million times and is used by more than 300 of the world’s top 10,000 websites. It has many features that make it extremely easy to learn and become effective with quickly. You can host a site for free at WordPress.com and use one of their 100’s of theme options or, as you become more experienced, host your own site using WordPress.org. The latter offers you a way to purchase low cost themes and turn your blog into an extremely professional looking site.
2. Blogger.com – Owned by Google, Blogger allows private or multi-user blogs. It can be a good choice for personal or extremely informal blogs but it is very standard in design and construction.
3. TypePad.com – Typepad is the easiest blogging service to use for beginners and can be a great starting spot for those inexperienced bloggers. They also offer some great design options that can thoroughly impress without having to do any design work.

Next Steps

After you have selected a blogging platform, start a personal blog. The purpose of setting up the personal blog is not only to hone your skills but to show potential businesses the “proof in the pudding.”

Once you have your blog up and running you can begin to search the internet for businesses that either don’t yet have a blog or are in serious need of some updates and changes. You can offer yourself up as a blogging expert and begin raking in profits for content creation and setup.

Building a Blogger Empire

As you help more and more businesses with their blogs you will be creating a blogging portfolio that could impress anyone. Now you can literally showcase dozens of blogs you have not only created but managed. You are well on your way to not only making money on internet but turning the internet into your business.

Good content draws lots of attention, and when you’re getting lots of attention you stand to make lots of Internet money. Relatively speaking, at least. But before you start monetizing your page layouts and selling promotional widgets and generally getting your wealth on, you have to get your content in order first. Good content isn’t the only thing needed to amass a large following, but it’s like the skeleton of your plan to making Internet money: without it, all your efforts will end up being one formless mess that just leaks away into the sewers. And that’s not so good for business.

Have something to say
Captivating content – content which makes you sit up and take notice, content you can’t imagine living without – is the sort of content which can make its owners truly wealthy. What is captivating content about? It can be absolutely anything, from a page on plumbing supplies to sketch comedy videos about the workplace to pictures of cute kittens doing cute things. However, it helps if you’re passionate and/or knowledgeable about the area of content you’re going in to. Knowing your target audience also helps: don’t generalize if you’re dealing in a very technical niche area, but don’t use heaps of jargon if you’re doing, say, a funny video about kittens. Unless it’s for veterinary purposes.

Say it differently, say it well
Certain conventions exist around any area of Internet content, whether it be text or audio or video. Things like repeating certain keywords in your text to get better SEO, or tagging your YouTube clips with only a few tags, or linking your audio podcasts to an RSS feed for download. It’s a good idea to get familiar with the technical conventions relating to your content production to avoid glitches or annoyances which might turn people away from your work. However, when it comes to creative conventions, anything goes. Originality and innovation are deeply embedded in the framework of the Internet, and you can draw a huge following by keeping well away of current fashions and trends. Experiment with your writing style; try using humor or a perspective not usually experienced; reach out to your audience with avenues for dialogue like social media and commenting. Don’t feel pressure to conform and fit the mould: the most successful content producers on the Internet are usually the trendsetters, not the followers.

If your content is good and you persevere with it, you’ve got a good chance of making some pretty large Internet money (or at least gathering a loyal group of fans). Don’t expect to see success overnight, and remember that content is only one part of the equation to making Internet money. But with a little creativity and a constant eye for improvement, it’s not too hard to create a well-trafficked website or profile. The next step is getting it to pay the bills for you.

The internet is, for the most part, a pretty lawless place. Sure, there are rules and guidelines which the big players (tend to) abide by, but there’s little penalty when smaller companies or individuals break promises or run off into the sunset without paying what they ought to. Anyone who’s setting out to make Internet money should be aware of a few common shady types out there, and it pays to know how to avoid being their next victim.

The Con Artist
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The Internet is packed full of get-rich-quick gurus and suspicious schemes which will more than likely bleed you dry if you let them. Look out for excessively enthusiastic language, flashy websites or emails, and pay rates which vastly exceed expectations (like being offered hundreds of dollars to, say, fill in surveys). The best way to stay safe of these scammers is to use a little common sense and never give out your personal or banking details. Instead, use a secure payment gateway like Paypal.

The Runner
Whether you’re selling goods or offering your services online – one of the main ways through which people amass Internet money – your greatest fear will be the guy who doesn’t pay. It’s almost impossible to chase these people down and extract your hard-earned cash, so caution and prevention are the keys to success here. When selling goods, always demand payment first or negotiate some sort of half-now, half-later deal. Don’t be afraid to state your terms upfront or refuse a customer who you think won’t (or can’t) pay. If you’re a freelancer or a service provider, do a little detective work on the client first: a quick Google search and a couple of emails to past employees can give you a good idea of a client’s trustworthiness. Legitimate buyers and clients won’t be offended if you check up on them or ask them questions: they’re probably doing the same to you, too.

The Flamer
Your reputation is key to making Internet money, and sometimes people will go out of their way to tarnish it. Regardless of whether they genuinely feel aggrieved or just want to yank your chain, don’t fan the flames: reply to incendiary comments with civility and wit, and address genuine concerns with professionalism and an open mind. The Internet may be a lawless place, but that just gives politeness a greater value when it’s used. And you may even get some decent feedback along the way.

The popularity of the micro-blogging site, Twitter, has taken off to new levels over the last few years. They now have more than 190 million visitors monthly and it has been reported that there are more than 50 million Tweets per day globally.

Now doesn’t that sound like a group of people big enough that companies might want to tap into the potential to market to them? The short answer is yes and the long answer is that there are a bunch of sites available for you to join and simply make money by tweeting specific messaging.

The bottom line is that you can make money using the Internet from your living room while you use your Twitter account. We’ll give you the information to do it in just a few steps.

Sign up for a Twitter Account

First things first, if you aren’t yet on Twitter you need to go to Twitter.com and sign up for a personal account. This process takes about 10 minutes and the only personal information it requires other than your name is an email account so you can get notifications when someone begins to follow you, sends you a message, etc.

After signing up for the account you can begin to follow as many people as you want. I recommend following as many as possible as quickly as possible to increase your money making chances in the next step.

Connecting with the advertisers

There are a handful of companies that you can sign up with to start advertising to your new Twitter friends and followers. The biggest sites are Twittad, Magpie, Sponsored Tweets and Ad.ly. These companies began as a way to capitalize on using the Twitter base of users by advertising through celebrity Twitter pages but have become a source of income for regular Joe’s such as you.

How much will I make?

The answer to this question isn’t as simple as coming up with an average figure. Reports have been made of people making as much as $20,000 for specific Tweets, but this certainly isn’t the norm and shouldn’t be expected.

Sponsored Tweets says their average payout is about $10 per tweet and a user gets 2-5 offers per month. Magpie says users can earn in the $100-$300 range. Twittad says an average payout is between $15-$25 per week.

Although none of these payouts are enough money to quit your day job – they can easily add up to a nice secondary income for anyone with internet access and a Twitter account.

If you grow your Twitter reach and become a member of each paid Twitter advertisers site you can certainly expect to pull in anywhere from $100-$500 per month.

If you continue to grow your following, you will continue to earn more. John Chow, a regular Joe on Twitter, has a follower count of more than 50,000 and is earning around $10,000 per month from using these sites.

Click Through My Ad

Followers are a key component, but engagement is even more important. Your total number of click throughs on the advertisements you post will directly influence what you take home. Now that you are beginning to understand what it takes to make money on Twitter you need to make sure your follower base is paying attention enough to click on the ads. Make sure your tweets between ads are entertaining and that you are talking directly with other people. If your followers spread the unique link from an ad you used – you reap the benefits.

Everyone has heard of Amazon.com, right? American’s largest online retailer with total revenue over $24 billion and more than 70 million visitors to their site each month? The assumption is that you have and if you haven’t you are certainly missing out on another opportunity to make money on the Internet and make that money quickly.

Amazon.com offers anyone the ability to set up an online store within their marketplace for free. The benefit of opening up your own online store is to sell goods on a site that gets TONS of traffic each month. If someone is looking for an old Nintendo game – they go to Amazon.com. If they want a specific book or toy – they go to Amazon.com.

You can set up your own personal online store in minutes and Amazon.com offers tutorials and help along the way. You can have your personal online store within the site up in mere minutes and be ready to sell your stuff.

What is the catch?

Because you get to use one of the Top 10 most trafficked sites in America to sell your stuff – they take a percentage of each sale. The percentage is outlined beforehand and as you add each item for sale to your online store Amazon.com lets you know exactly how much you will take home if it sells.

What about shipping?

Obviously people from all over the continental US will be purchasing your items and somehow you are responsible for getting the items to them. You are required to ship out items within two business days of their purchase and Amazon.com even gives you a packing slip to print out and take to the post office. You will have to pay for shipping up front but they reimburse you as part of the overall money you will receive.

How do I make money?

This is the simple part – just collect your old items that you no longer use and see how much they are worth in the Amazon.com marketplace. A wise person once said – “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”

If you want to get really creative and potentially make even more money – visit your local thrift store or a yard sale and buy items dirt cheap and then sell them for profit via Amazon.com. It’s a simple and easy way to make money without having to do anything other than turning on the computer, connecting to the internet and starting your own online store.

When do I get paid?

Amazon.com will tally up your sold items for a two week period and then deposit that amount directly into the bank account of your choice. As long as you have a PayPal account or a checking account – you will get paid every two weeks from the time you sign up! It’s easy to track your sold items, manage your marketplace, and more importantly, see how much money you’ve made right from your very own online store’s home page.

Do you have a computer? Well you are here so the answer to that must be yes.

Do you have an opinion? Well you are here and you are a human so that must be yes, too.

Since you answered yes to both of those questions you might be interested in knowing that you can partake in online surveys from home and make money, try new products and get free swag. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of companies that enlist research panels of customers to complete surveys online and you can easily be one of those people.

What can I expect starting out?

A full salary this is not, but packaged together with some of the other great ideas on this site and you are getting close to that full salary right from the comforts of your house. It is possible to earn between $50 and $200 per month in cash and free products if you take the time to complete multiple short surveys from internet survey sites. The key is to make sure you sign up with multiple sites to increase your chance of being selected for the surveys. Almost all the sites are free and you will get an email each day if your demographic background fits the need for a survey that is going to be taken.

Upon joining each site you will be expected to provide personal and demographic information which will not be disclosed with other sites as long as you are using a reputable survey site. This information is used to select participants for surveys on specific products and services. When you are selected as a panel member, you will receive an e-mail inviting you to take a short screening survey to determine if you fit the profile for that particular survey. If you qualify, you will be asked to take a longer online survey in exchange for some sort of compensation.

Compensation varies widely by company, demographic and urgency of the survey. You may receive $2 or $20 or be sent free products in exchange for trying them and offering feedback to the survey company.

How do know how to handle the surveys and survey sites to maximize my money?

Make sure you join several survey sites (at least five and up to twenty) if you want to take daily surveys. Register with an email address that you check multiple times daily so you can respond quickly and have a better chance at being included.

If you aren’t selected for a survey, don’t get discouraged. It may take a while to see which survey companies are looking for your specific demographics more often than others. Just make sure when your opportunity arises that you fill out all the information accurately and in a timely fashion.

Beware scam survey sites

It would be unrealistic to think all the survey sites you will find in Google are legit. To make sure you are teaming up with a reputable site make sure you do your research first.

Many sites that pose as survey sites really just want to obtain marketing information from you and they will sell your personal information to advertisers. Expect a slew of SPAM if this happens. To avoid this make sure you read any survey site’s privacy policy and you research their name in Google to get reviews from previous survey takers.

Any credible site will either have a privacy policy statement that is easy to see or accredited logos from somewhere like the Better Business Bureau.

Make sure you choose wisely and you could be well on your way to a steady stream of income and goodies next time you log on to the internet.

Making money online can sometime seem like a secretive black box that no one can open. This is, without question, not the reality. You can make a little or a lot of money online depending on your drive, skill set and ability to use the right tools and platforms. One of those platforms is online work team marketplaces. What does that mean you ask? It means that there are places you can go online to find project work for a variety of tasks – all on the internet!

All you have to do is go to a great place like oDesk or Elance and sign up for a free account. They’ll ask you to fill in some information about your expertise and then you’ll be set free into the marketplace to look for jobs that suit your skill set.

The Hiring Process

Now that you have an account and are searching for internet work like web development, social media, graphic design, copywriting, software programming, service representation, virtual assistants and more – you need get yourself hired.

Once you find the different areas of expertise and work available you have the ability to find out what the project budget is (i.e. how much you will make), estimated time to complete (i.e. how much you will work) and overall assignment (i.e. what you’ll be doing).

The last step in getting the job is applying and letting the employer know how much you’ll charge and what your experience is. There is no limit to how many jobs you can apply for and if they choose you – the real fun begins!

Making Money

The greatest part about joining an online workforce is how easily you can get paid for what you do. You’ll be required to keep timesheets within the marketplace and when the job is completed you get your money IMMEDIATELY!

All you have to do is connect your account to your brick and mortar bank account or your PayPal account and the money will be distributed to that account in real-time. No invoicing or chasing down what you’ve earned. You do the work and do it well and you get paid – no questions asked.

Start Earning Money Today

Each month, there are thousands of companies posting jobs on these reputable marketplaces for online work teams on a daily basis. oDesk alone claims that they have distributed more than $65 million in a single month before while Elance has delivered on projects worth more than $294 million.

Companies are getting smart and realizing that traditional office spaces are just an unnecessary expense and they know phenomenal talent – like yours – is out there on the internet ready to make money for a hard day’s work at their home office.

As with any online job, make sure you are joining reputable sites like the ones mentioned above or others that have received good reviews and are recognized by the Better Business Bureau.

Now get out there and join an online work team today!

People make money by selling things. That’s a given (unless you’re really bad at cutting a deal, in which case you should probably stick to your day job). The Internet is no different, with people selling everything from their old junk to customized apparel to the rights to their creative property. So how do you go about setting up and completing a transaction on the Internet, one which will secure the Internet money you deserve and leave all parties feeling like they’ve done well? The online marketplace in which you conduct business is one of, if not the key factor in determining who you’re dealing with and how your deal gets done. In this article, we’ll look at three different arenas in which you can sell your stuff, looking at their different strengths and weaknesses for different sorts of trade.

Auctions and forums – the ‘true’ marketplace
If anything can be said to represent the bustle and hubbub of a real-world marketplace, it’d be the online forum. On big auction sites like eBay and bulletin-board forums like Craigslist, postings stimulate competing offers, extended negotiations and the moving of veritable mountains of cash every day. You can buy and sell virtually anything in these forums: auction sites are better-suited to tangible goods, while bulletin-boards usually deal more in jobs and services and even intellectual property. That’s not a rule set in stone, however, with lots of crossover between these two forms of online marketplace. If you’re selling goods on a one-off basis, these sites are your best bet. Make sure to post in the most appropriate categories of location and item-type, and always double-check your buyers through trust-ratings and a bit of soft negotiation.

Shopfront sites
Setting up your own personal page with an online payment gateway is probably the best option if you’re selling stuff you make on a regular basis. Custom apparel, hand-made goods and other craft-based businesses are best operated with a static website and a payment gateway such as Paypal, allowing customers to add purchases to shopping carts, use their credit cards securely, and so on. However, it’s good to make sure you know what you’re doing with your site: sloppy code or bad design can not only drive potential customers away, it can compromise their details or prevent them from making a purchase altogether. While Paypal is relatively simple to set up (Merchant Accounts have a range of coding presets to copy and paste) and most hosting services provide web templates and the like, a little technical knowledge is crucial nevertheless. With an eye for detail and regular monitoring, an online shopfront for a good product can net you a lot more money than a real-life store.

Social media
Don’t underestimate the power of friends when selling online. Short-message services like Twitter allow you to publish what are basically advertisements to hundreds or thousands of people at once, while Facebook even has its own proprietary marketplace where friends can sell their goods through existing social networks. The greatest advantage of selling through social media is the follow-on effect it can have: through reposts and retweets and the like, your product or goods can get worldwide coverage within minutes – and you may even find the best buyer who you’ve never met. Experimenting with social media can generate enormous buzz for your new brand – or it might just let you sell that old record player once and for all. Whatever it is, it’s worth a shot.
